Phonics

In Reception, we have daily Phonics sessions. We are following the Read Write Inc. Phonics Scheme. We have daily phonic lessons, followed by letter formation and reading practice.

We begin with teaching the children how to blend words together, and then progress to reading books. They are given books appropriate to their ability and this is closely monitored by the class teacher.

Please find below some useful links to support your child with their phonics.

Click here for a video of how to pronounce the pure sounds. It is helpful to know these as your child will be learning to say both the letter and the pure sounds at school.

Reading

The children will take home different books either ever 3 or 5 days.

  1. Ability book which relates to the sound and book they are learning and reading at school

  2. A picture storybook to take home to encourage reading at bedtime

The ability book will be accessed via https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

Log in with your children’s details, which are stuck in their reading records. Here you will access the books and quizzes the class teacher has set. You will have a certain amount of days to read them before they are removed from your dashboard.

We expect the children to read these books fluently at home, and to be working on their storytelling ability instead. They will have read the book at school, the days prior to it being sent home.

Here is the order the children learn Set 1 sounds in. Underneath each sound, is the rhyme to help them form the letter.

Following the Read Write Inc. scheme, the children will be introduced to green and red words. Green words are words the children can segment and blend using their sound knowledge. Red words are words that children cannot decode, and need to learn independently.

Below are examples of Red Words the children will learn during each Set.

Please use this helpful guide below to help you with recognising similar sounds and the way the sounds are pronounced.
